Based on an 18th century Indian palampore, Tree of Life is the crown jewel of Lee Jofa's collection. The full-width design features a flourishing, fantastical tree blooming with stylized flowers, with exotic birds perched on curving branches. This breathtaking pattern was created over two years in the 1920s by renowned English textile designer, Harry Wearne. The hand-block printed fabric continues to be produced in the same artisanal fashion as it has been for decades. The complex layout incorporates 267 hand-carved wooden blocks for each 100" vertical repeat, put together like a 3D jigsaw puzzle. The labor-intensive, time consuming process can only be executed by skilled artisans with at least seven years of training. Even for an experienced hand block printer, only two yards of Tree of Life can be produced in a single day. Recolored for the first time in honor of the brand's 200th anniversary, the Lee Jofa studio approached this daunting task through hand-painted studies and trials. The resulting colorways are showstopping works of art sure to delight and inspire long standing fans of this classic. For the first in its history, Tree of Life is available as a printed wallcovering in both a continuous and panel version including the original decorative base.
